Poker Tournament Types

Whether you have been playing poker for long or just started you probably have heard about poker tournaments. There are several types of poker tournaments that you can join, so we will look at what each one means to help you decide where you might fit in.

First of all a poker tournament is a gathering in which the winners are decided by playing poker for a specific type of game. The World Series of Poker is normally played with Texas Hold’em Poker. It has a specific amount of time it will be played and several layers to the tournament. In fact you have to buy in to the preliminary tournaments and play your way to the WSOP. Only the best players will make it to the finals where it is a battle of who comes out with the most money at the end. In fact many of the poker tournaments will be played to see who rounds up all the money at the table to determine a winner.

Online tournaments are different than the WSOP and other land poker tournaments. In an online poker tournament the games often have a time limit and the person to make the more points on the games played will be the winner. It could mean the one with the most money at the end, or the one that had the best number of hands. Each online casino has different rules regarding their poker tournaments and how they are played.

Above we mentioned a buy- in tournament. This means you have to have the correct price in order to buy in to the game. There is usually a limit or minimum to get to the table. In some cases you just have to be able to buy enough chips at the correct denominations to play.

Sit and go tournaments are another type of poker tournament you can join. This type of tournament has no set schedule for the start or end. It just starts when players have anted up their money. At this point you can have a nine to ten players in the game. You also have the multi table games in which there are more than one game going on in the same tournament until the tables are whittled down to one table of 9 or 10 like the WSOP tournament.

Online tournaments with multi tables are when the online players are at several tables at once playing several hands of poker. This is the most uncommon tournament online. Also with online casinos you have freerolls. This means you are playing a game with no cash or money down to buy chips. You are instead earning points to be the winner.

Lastly most poker tournaments are cash in which you earn cash prizes or you play with cash instead of chips. The poker tournament you join should be within your means regarding your bankroll. The point of the poker tournaments is to determine who the best player is as well as win the jackpot.
